No Karate Class on Saturday, Feb. 4th
There will be no karate classes this coming Saturday, Feb. 5th. But, there will be a FitStrike class at the normal time. Why no karate? I will be training 3 people from the Connecticut Army Corp of Engineers in my Self Defense Instructor Training program. These 3 people have all completed the home study segment of the training program. They are flying in together on Friday morning – we will be training all day Friday (about 6-8 hours) and then finish it off on Saturday (about 6 hours). Due to their flight schedule, they need to be finished Saturday by a specific time (so they have time to clean up and head back to the airport). The only way to make sure that happens is to start their Saturday training by 10 am. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. When there are future trainings like this (and there may be – the phone calls are starting to come in on a more regular basis), I will be able to provide more advanced notice if the trainings affect the schedule at all (which I will try to avoid as much as possible). Thanks for understanding.

Karate Class Schedule Changes Take Effect on Monday, Feb. 6th
Our classes are growing – this is a great thing! I want to make sure that with this growth, we don’t lose the quality of what we are doing and providing in the martial arts programming. I want to be proactive in addressing any issues or concerns that parents and/or students may have! So, I am making some necessary improvements/changes to the current class schedule that will go into effect on Monday, February 6th. I have attached a new schedule (this will be put on the web site next weekend) for you to review, but here is a summary of the changes:
- Dyno-Mite Pre-Karate changes from 5 to 5:45 to the new time slot of 4:45 to 5:30 pm – same days (I will be talking to Dyno-Mite parents about this).
- There is now a Junior/Adult Karate class on Saturday morning from 9:30 to 10:15 (45 minutes versus the weekday classes which are now 1 hour)
- There are Samurai Warrior Classes for all belt levels 4 nights a week and on Saturday morning – see the new class start and end times.
- Samurai Warrior / White to Yellow Belt – Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 5:45 to 6:30 pm, Saturday 10:15 to 11 am
- Samurai Warrior / Green to Black Belt – Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30 to 7:15 pm, Saturday 11 to 11:45 am
- Samurai Warrior / Yellow Belt to Black Belt – Wednesdays from 4:45 to 5:30 pm
Changes – Why?
- Junior/Adult – I shortened the class time for the weekday class because I am adding Saturday morning classes for this group (no change in fees) – notice the new ending time for the weeknight classes.
- Samurai Warrior – My goal is to get the class sizes down – to make sure students are getting the attention they need. The only way I could add more class times is to shorten the class duration (if you research it, most martial arts schools offer 45 minute classes for children). The students will still get their physical fitness and basic technique practice work in, but the specific skill instruction will be more concentrated. Now, all SW students have numerous times each week that they can come to class – I am still not placing a limit on the number of classes that can be attended each week! No change in fees.
- Notice that many of the classes run back-to-back – students need to arrive at Empower early enough to be on-time for class. This also means our “after class ritual” with the stickers will be changing (as you could probably tell with the new sticker program anyway) – kids will only get stickers when we start a new week on the program (right now, I am handing out new sticker sheets every two weeks).
I know that change is not good if it happens too often. But, these changes are intended to benefit each student. I don’t think you will find another martial arts program around here (or anywhere) that offers the flexibility that Empower provides. We do this because I want everyone – adult and child – to be able to experience the benefits that martial arts training can provide (no matter what your age!).If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask me!
