What are the core classes/workouts 
of the SAFE & STRONG! program?

SAFE & STRONG! Core Programming – Empower Training Systems provides lesson plans for the full 24 week program (three 8 week sessions) for all 3 Core programs:
  • SAFE & STRONG! for adults, ages 16+

The creator of Safe & Strong!, Tim Rochford, is a 7th degree black belt in Kajukenbo Karate, has a Master’s degree in Exercise Science and has been providing corporate and general public self defense training on a national and international basis since 1984. 

He developed a kickboxing fitness instructor training program called Martial Fitness Kickboxing and a self defense instructor training program called Empower Self Defense. Both programs are approved for continuing education credits for certified fitness professionals.

Rochford has always disagreed with the claims made by kickboxing fitness programs – “learn to protect yourself while getting in shape!” These programs falsely equated the ability and capability to execute self defense under high duress situations with the ability to do so in the safe environment of a fitness class utilizing striking techniques to elevate heart rate! Rochford recognized that many extremely important components of a comprehensive, practical and realistic self defense training program were missing from kickboxing classes. 

Safe & Strong! empowers Instructors/Trainers or Participants through safe, effective & progressive fitness programs combined with realistic, practical & effective self defense training! And, Participants by developing awareness about his or her unique abilities and capabilities and through education on how to gain and maintain a high quality of life.

Some general guidelines for the Safe & Strong! Program

  • Class duration recommendations of 60 to 75 minutes, or 75 to 90 minutes.
  • ​Class Segments consist of a range of time ratios, depending on what the self defense class segment is covering at the time of the session.
  • ​Typical ratios would be 60-65% fitness training followed by 35-40% self defense training. These ratios may vary according to specific class curriculum and activities.
