Fitness trainers understand that there is more to training as person than just the physical aspects. The same is true with self-defense training. In fact, the initial, and what I consider the most important part of this training, is not physical, at all! It is Awareness training because the best self-defense is avoiding situations where personal safety is threatened or compromised. These must be included in any reputable self-defense program. Anyone can learn and teach Awareness!
Like any physical activity, a fitness professional will need to commit to the time and effort necessary to become a skilled and knowledgeable self-defense instructor – but that same commitment is required when a new fitness training program or method is being learned.
Article #5 of this series will provide some additional reasons why a fitness professional should consider becoming a self-defense instructor.
